Birkie weekend
Finally doing a post about the birkie weekend. I've been straight up lazy since then. Now, the story. Headed up there on Wednesday with Brenda in tow. Met some friends. Looking forward to a little R&R before the race. Went skiing on Wednesday. Matt didn't make it because he was sick. I made sure to stay at least 3ft away from him at all times. Woke up Thursday, went & did all the normal Birkie stuff (shows, bib pick up, etc...). Friday, got up early and me, Matt, and his fiance Angela went skiing. Hot Damn it's gonna be fast I thought. Sub 3hr time I thought for sure. Spent the rest of the day chillin out at the cabin. Hooked up with some friends for a delicious meal. Saturday, race day, nothing major, just the pre game warm up and ritual. I did notice it wasn't as fast as Friday. Fresh snow slowed it down a little. Oh well, part of the game right? Had the game plan ready, set, go! I was off like a prom dress. Worked my way through the crowds. Passed all the people I knew, which gave me the motivation to go faster. Hot Damn what a fun race! I finished at 3:01:46. The atmosphere is outstanding! After the race, hung out with some friends. Had some beers, talked stories. Thats pretty much it. By far the coolest and funnest race I have ever done.

Well Saturdays race was a tough one. I wanted to get a good start. That's where it went wrong. They said go so I went right to my face. I planted a pole right in front of my ski. Scrambling to get my glasses back on, the high school crowd was cheering. Got back on my feet. My glasses were fucked, and I was a mess. Turned the first corner, right back to my face, same thing. Now I'm way behind. Get my composure back together. Got into place after about 2k. After I settled in I went through a whirl wind of emotions. Should I DNF? Should I just ski and BS with people? Nope! I just put my head down and skied as hard as I could. Ended up 10th overall. 2nd in age. Not too bad for a horrible start. After the race I was left with the feeling of failure but, Brenda put it all into prospective. First, at least you got it out of the way for the Birkie. Second, use that feeling for a sub 3hr time at the Birkie. Well put Brenda. I will.

This weekend was awesome. I participated in a 26k pre birkie ski race. So lets start with Friday night. Headed out to Chippewa to stay with my brother "Beeps"(Derek). He was my pitt crew this weekend. Courts made me some spaghetti(thanks Courts). Had a couple of berrs, BSed for a while, and was in bed by 8:30pm. Up and Adam for some pre race activities by 5:00am. On the road by 7:00am. Got to Hayward and got a 40min warm up. Then the race started. I started prabably about 200 back. Then, I realized once I started going that starting up farther ahead and having people pass me would have been way easier than me trying to pass a lot of people. Thank god there was one minor hill climb, that I got to pass about 100 people. Still skiing with a big group, but 2 groups started to form. Hesitant on my abilities to ski, I backed off, and skied in the 2nd group. Soon realizing I should have gone for the first group. So I made a break for it. I was making progress going up hills, but getting blown away on downhills. WTF!! I'm 190lbs. I should have no problems going down the hill fast. So I finally caught the tail end of the first group on a climb, then a down hill, and they were gone, and I was exausted. Skied about 10k, then the 2nd group finally caught up. By this time my skis were not hardly moving on the down hills. So I got in line with the 2nd group. Could have easily dominated them on the up hills, but then going down I had to work my ass off just to stay in tact. I ended up at 1:24. 43 over all. 3rd in my age group. Hell Yeah! Super jacked! Thanks to my pitt crew "Beeps". So back to my slow skis. I had a slight suspicion that I was sold the wrong size skis. After doing some talking with other people, and web searching, I realized that a fat guy like me needs to roll on some longer skis. So, I bought a pair (yes I am a tool). So I am selling 2 pair of race skis. Fischer RCS to be exact. So drop me a line if you are interested. (fuirolefty@yahoo.com)

Its funny how a simple change to a bike can make you appreciate it. With my ski season in full swing, I've just been stopping here and going there on my way out of town. So my commuting has been down. I still commute to the usual places,(work) but not much other than that. So, my new coffee bell has gotten my lazy ass commuting full time again. Now I just drive there and home, and do my business on my bike. Speaking of my ski season... Its been going super awesome. I'm in really good shape, and pumped for my race schedule. I have been trying different things to get my body to recover. This is a picture of me trying to sit in the bath tub in 8lbs of ice and cold water. Probably not gonna do that ever again.
