Winter Camping

I have been trying to go winter camping for three years now, and finely made it out this year. I had some extra time this winter do to my foot and not being able to ski, (which is a good thing as far as I’m concerned). Anyway, winter camping is a lot of fun. This is actually my second two day winter camping trip. The first time was at Levis with Matthew and Dan. This time was on Jerry Lake, off the ice age trail, up there north of 64. The crew was Dan, Tim, and I. Winter camping consists of: keeping warm, making fire wood, food, and water. All of that while taking pulls form the flask, and taking smart to one another, make the days go by fast. Here are the rest of the pictures to tell the tale.

I started the day thinking that Dan Hillier and I were going to go winter camping, but...
Here how the story goes: On Christmas day I went for a three hour classic ski workout. On that day I didn't have good technique and that caused me to slip alot on any kind of incline. Anyway, by the end of the day my foot was killin me. So as smart as I am I went skiing the next day, needless to say that didn't last very long. My workouts since have consisted of skate skiing about four days a week. Than having to rest my foot the rest of the week. The brain child that I am, on Monday I tried classic skiing again, needless to say I had to stop after thirty min's. This lead me to the doctors office this morning with the news of a stress fracture in my metatarsal. Ya for me, I to have be in this walking cast for four weeks. Look out bike trainer here I come, or maybe some P90X?

I rode with a PRO yesterday, no pictures though, of the pro that is. He was riding to fast for that...well I guess I was at the rivet and he was just cruising. None the less it was good to ride with the bro, who is the Pro that I'm taking about. Anyway, the PRO was running late. Which wasn't a big deal, I had some tree removal and raking that had to get done. Lucy loves to do trail work, and looks good doing it.
I hiked in a rake, chain saw and a Rogue hoe. Thankfully I had the rogue because I seem to be losing my construction touch. Meaning I used the chain saw that was there. I filled it up with gas, bar oil, and neglected to make sure it ran before I hiked it in three miles and discovered it didn't. (Hell, my back pack opens everyday when I go to school and if my No. 2 pencil goes down I just grab another one). Anyway, I was not going to be defeated, and I axed the three trees out of the way. It took me 50min of axing the trees with the rogue, but like I said, I was not going to be defeated. For many of you dirt diggers out there, the rogue is a superb tool.

I hope that everyone got outside this weekend to enjoy the sun!It was a awesome weekend to race. I signed up to do the 12k classic and skate at Nine Mile this past weekend. My fist race for the day was the classic race. I did ready well finishing 12th overall(they have me as Craig Brian?). I skied with my team mate(Phil Mahoney) most of the race, he out poled me at the end(awesome)!
As for the skate race, I got caught up in some traffic and ended up taking a spill and cramp up. I didn't recover from that and ended up 26th overall(oh well). I mange to have an ice bread, not the best I've had but it was 32°F . Brenda and I after the skate race.
Sunday: Brenda, Britt(Brenda's sister), and I decided to go and get some more sun at Levis. Another awesome day!

Today, I skied my way into 23rd overall in the freestyle race. My two times together put me in 26th for the weekend. I must say that the Stormy Kromer Pursuit is a must do race!(and you get a super cool hat) The pursuit is an intense type of racing! All around good weekend, and two more frost beards. Stay tuned, at the end of the ski season I will have a vote of which frost beards is the best.

Today I had my first encounter with a motorist on my roller skies. I had been anticipating this, so I was ready. So here is what happened. There was a car coming from the South, as I was skiing from the North a car rolled up behind me and laid on the horn. The car from the South passed. The car from the North buzzed me, and mentioned some obscene words. I proceeded to flip him off. He stopped. I was thinking to myself, It's about time one of these pieces of shit stopped... But first I want to tell you where I stand. Recently, I have been noticing people don't have time to slow down for roller skiers or bicyclists, but a month ago they did. I think it's because of the change in weather, and the darkness that has fallen upon us. Don't you think that it's affecting me too North bound driver? Other things I have noticed about pissed off drivers is that they are young adults or fat people. I am going to stress about the fat people. I don't know if they have some kind of problem with a guy that wants to stay physically fit or just straight up jealous that I can see my dick and they can't. (I only have problems with fat guys on the road) I can think this because at one time I was ignorant towards people who worked out on the road, and I had a problem with the change of seasons.....Any way, the North bound driver stopped. With his window rolled down, he told me I had a lot of balls flipping him off and was going to find the cops. He told me all this with his window rolled half down as he was driving away from me. I was so pissed at the time that I wished he would have gotten out of his car. I would have removed my rollerski and proceeded to kick his ass with it. So what was he after? Would it have made him happy to hit with his car? So I could be out of his way? Who is the winner?

Well, I just completed my 4 week of school and everything sees to be fine. I bombed a Geography test today "oh well", had many up and downs in English and Math is my best class. I really do have a grip on all of my classes and the time I have to put into them.
I think that my brain is getting bigger which is a good thing , right? I have spent more time inside the past 4 weeks than I have in the past 4 years. I no longer have man hands and had a few alcoholic out bursts, damn that mug club!
It is raining out right now and I have a roller ski party to tend.

With the crowd not so big this year, we found ourselves upgrading from this to this. Well lets get this party started. I started the race because I wanted to just drop the hammer and see what I could do. My goal was to get into the top 30 for the first lap. I made my goal. I came in 25th overall. I guess that goal was very minor compared to what else we had to do. Race for 24 hours. Second out was Brett S. He ended up having a flat tire. His CO2 didn't work, and had to bum a pump. Damn! Lost a lot of time, dead last. Oh well we knew we had to remain study, because there was a lot of racing to be done. As the team threw down study laps, we found ourselves crawling back up the ladder. Nightfall came, once again we remained study. Had a 50 min. gap on 4th place, and whithin 8 min of 2nd place. Then Chris Z came back in with a broken handle bar. Work Work Work! Well it boiled down to the last two laps. Joe N. gained 1 min gap, then it was my turn to seal the deal. So I gave it my all, but got passed by the 2nd place team rider. All I did was put my head down, stayed study, and hoped he would crack or have a technical. No such luck! We fell 3min 14seconds short of 2nd place. Oh well. A hell of an effort by my teammates Brett S, Chris Z, and Joe N. I had an absolute blast.
Other notes: LAIRD KNIGHT IS FULL OF HIMSELF!! I think anybody who was there would agree with me.

Thats right another DNF. Lap 1 going smooth, dropped the hammer, past a hand full of people. Psssssssss Damn! Flat. Flailing around like my arm had just been cut off, and watching a lot of people pass me. Back at it. Second lap without a hitch. Good times, lines getting dialed in I thought. Lap 3 going good, feeling good. I got this right? Psssssssss. Flat again, flailing around like my other arm got cut off. New tube, 1st CO2 didn't work. 2nd one did. Ripped off the velve stem, tire wasn't properly beaded. Tube went boom! Started the walk of shame, after a mile a guy gave me a 26" tube. Out of tubes and CO2 I just rode it back. My race was done after all that. To top it all off, I didn't go through the timing area, so my third lap didn't count. Dammit! Well at least it's just a bike race.

Well I did my first WORS race today. I didn't know what to expect, especially from all of the different things I have heard. It turns out, that it is one of the funnest races I have done in a long time. I think I had so much fun because...

1. I didn't have any goals for this race.

2. All the people I came across were nice (no turds).

3. Even though my results weren't high, I held my own throughout the whole race.

4. I preroad, warmed up and cooled down with my brother Darrin. That was off the hook. FUN!!
(no we did not race in the same class. Are you kiddin me? He's way too fast for me!)

A few things I didn't like about WORS...

1 Registration, I don't even know, but it was fucked up!

2 The website said a 5 mile loop, they had big maps, showing the loop that said 6 miles, and when I pulled up to the start line, Don announced that it was an 8 mile loop.

Things I need to work on...

1 Not set such high goals.(I am not a pro:)

2 I need to work on spinning on the flats. I am a good single track rider and can hold my own on the climbs. I guess the single track and climbing is way more fun than spinning on the open road.

Friday went without a hitch. Worked in the morning. Me and Lucy headed over to Levis in the afternoon. An hour of raking, an hour of riding had Lucy wore out.

Saturday. Met an old friend at Levis for a ride and more trail work, but I ended up riding most of the day and not doing any trail work. I had to be back to marshfield by 5. Brenda and I had to attend the curling club banquet. That's where it all went down hill. $50 for the two of us to get in. All you can eat and drink. FREE BEER, yes I said it, FREE BEER! We won $100 from the raffle. So it really was free beer. So there was no reason for my cup to be empty. Right? And, It is not unruley for me to fill 6 pitchers of beer at a time for only 10 people. Right? Break out the dancin shoes, because I am getting drunk!!!!

Notice how there is nobody else dancing around us. Oh yeah, I had fun. Probably too much fun. I had so much fun I made home and passed out on the stairs. I almost made it to my bed.

So today, I woke up feeling like a turd, and realized I am a turd. Me and Brenda made it out to Levis at about 12:30. Finished up cliffhanger. Me Brenda and Lucy went for a ride, then I called it a day. Lesson learned. Free beer isn't always the best thing for you, but can be a good time.

First race, YES! Well, not really. The first four laps went with out a hitch. Then I ate a ham sandwich. Then, the next two laps left me with a feeling of puking and shitting my pants. To some of you that might be cool, but to me it wasn't. So I called it quits after about four hours of riding. Now only if I could have kept up with my pit crew. Cold, but got me out of the pits faster than the group of guys I was riding with. Thanks Brenda.

Lesson learned, ham sandwiches do not work for me. I'm going to try PB&J at my next race.
